There are certain misconceptions that people have about singers and singing in general. I’ve heard them ALL in my 20 + year career as a voice coach and singing teacher.
I’ve mentioned before that singing is a learned skill, just like any other instrument ~ and yet so many people think they know everything about singing and voice use, even though they haven’t explored the techniques we use to build strong and healthy voices.
I always say that voice work and learning to sing is best received from an open and willing heart. The reframing of these myths is easy, with a voice coach who is resourced and ready to share their knowledge with you.
Here are the top 3 common vocal myths
You either “have it” or you don’t: Remember how I said singing is a learned skill just like any other instrument? If you have the use of your vocal cords, meaning there is no medical reason why you can’t sing, you can learn to sing and express yourself freely.
“I can’t hit high notes”: Often times, singers have access to much more range than they typically use. A common experience for those who feel they can’t hit high notes is that they have high amounts of muscle tension that makes it feel like they won’t be able to hit the high notes. BUT, see myth #1, singing is a learned skill and this common vocal issue is totally figure out able!
I need to strengthen my diaphragm: The diaphragm is a major muscle of inhalation and it is plenty strong on its own. It’s already working all day long (because, well, you breathe all day long!) so it doesn’t need to be strengthened (nor can it be). BUT what DOES need to happen is learning how to coordinate the action of your diaphragm with the rest of your instrument (that’s your entire body!)
Vocal myths recap:
Singing is a learned skill.
Singing is a learned skill.
Singing is a learned skill.
The more you sing and explore your voice for yourself, the more you’ll discover new things about it. Make sure you work with a voice coach when you bump up against some stuff you need help busting through!
