Comparison is a big block that often holds singers back from expressing themselves authentically.
BUT comparing your voice to someone else’s is like comparing apples and oranges. They could never be the same.
The Theodore Roosevelt quote “comparison is the thief of joy” comes up a lot in my one to one voice coaching sessions with singers.
As a vocal coach, I see it a lot. Comparison that is.
The “Science psychology” folks say that comparison is pretty much inevitable within our human design and our social structure, and so knowing that, here are some great ways to help you navigate such a tricky situation.
1. PRACTICE GRATITUDE: Daily and momentary gratitude practice can help you stay in your own creative artistic and self-confidence lane, specifically practice gratitude for your own unique voice and what it can offer the world.
2. SLAY YOUR SELF DOUBT:Question those looping thoughts that creep into your head and steal from you and your individuality as a singer.(They are thieves. They will steal from you.)
3. GET CLEAR ON YOUR LIMITING BELIEFS: and learn how to reframe them. Limiting beliefs often internalized oppression, and yet we often blame ourselves for someone else’s actions, beliefs or thoughts. It’s not always simple, to flip or overturn a limiting belief but the awareness of where it stems from is HUGE and can be a real support.
4. ALLOW YOURSELF GRACE AND PERMISSION TO NOT BE WHERE EVERYBODY ELSE IS And then when you do find yourself wishing you were on the other side of the fence, compassion and self-forgiveness.This one bold act could really save you a lot of heartache as you navigate the world of singing and performance and public speaking.
5. ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR UNIQUENESS! No two voices are the same. FULL STOP That’s it! No two voices are the same.so it is totally unfair to be comparing yourself to somebody else because their voice is also different than your voice.I mean.., if no two voices are the same, isn’t it kind of pointless to compare them?
6. CELEBRATE WINS!! celebrate your wins celebrate their wins celebrate their wins…You know, we collectively really benefit when we all show up as the badass’s that we are. Energetically, it changes the vibration around us…and then in turn we give everyone else the permission to do the same.
Comparison can cause us to over estimate, or overvalue what somebody else is or has and then in turn causes us to undervalue what we have, or are.
This misunderstanding is real and can really hold a lot of people back from stepping up to the mic.
Try applying the tips above to stop the comparison, and sing with YOUR voice today and always!
